The Approach
How We Handle Safety Surfacing and Borders
Most playground injuries involve falls, so protective surfacing is one of the most important parts of the plan. Options include engineered wood fiber, wood mulch, shredded rubber mulch, poured-in-place rubber and turf with the right shock-absorbing system.
Per the CPSC’s home playground handbook, loose-fill surfacing should be maintained at a depth of 9 inches for equipment up to 8 feet high, and sand or pea gravel at 9 inches for equipment up to 5 feet high, extending at least 6 feet beyond the equipment. Our Surfacing Calculator turns that into cubic yards.

How deep should loose-fill surfacing be?
The CPSC advises at least 9 inches of compressed loose fill (wood mulch, engineered wood fiber or shredded rubber) for equipment up to 8 feet high. An initial 12 inches compresses to about 9. Sand and pea gravel are advised only up to 5 feet.
Does equipment with no elevated platform need surfacing?
The CPSC says equipment with no elevated play surface, such as a sandbox or an activity wall, does not need protective surfacing.
How far should surfacing extend?
At least 6 feet beyond the perimeter of the equipment, and further in front of and behind swings.
